LinkedIn is an excellent social media website for many reasons. What I especially like about LinkedIn is that you will not find out what your friends ate for breakfast or that they just celebrated their dogs first birthday. LinkedIn is a place to connect with like minded professionals and find quality content and information.
Another perk to LinkedIn is that you find very few real estate professionals who will blast their latest and greatest listing, which is a surefire way to fail in social media. LinkedIn should be a part of every real estate marketing strategy, however, it should not be used as a platform to brag about your recent sale or newest listing.

It’s important that if you’re in the real estate industry, you know who you should be following on various social media websites, LinkedIn is no exception.

There are nearly 8,000 Realtors in Raleigh, NC and one of the ways in which we separate ourselves from the pact is by doing things differently.
It’s easy to confuse social media with ‘selling’ vs. ‘relationship building.’ This is where a lot of Realtors and people in general make huge mistakes. Social media is an opportunity to build a relationship, once that relationship is nurtured you don’t have to sell anything because people naturally want to buy… and they will.
LinkedIn is one network where people are making this mistake…. You connect with someone on LinkedIn and you immediately message them to ‘sell them’ – whether you’re selling an actual product, or selling them on a ‘in-person meeting,’ you went right for the sale. HUGE MISTAKE. You just lost that person’s trust.
What you should be doing on LinkedIn is following each connection with a thank you message and asking ‘how can I help you grow your business?’
Give, give, give.
You will be so different from everyone else who is selling, and you are coming from a place of contribution. This is how you build a relationship, and that is what social media is about.
It’s time to start marketing our real estate businesses like it’s 2016 because as Gary Vaynerchuk often says too many of you are out there throwing right hooks when you should be jabbing. Give, give, give and then you ask – Don’t go right for the ask.

Aman Singh is a Real Estate Agent in Central New Jersey and blogs at NJ Realty Homes. Officially licensed since October 2015, Aman’s journey to blogging began when he first passed his real estate exam. He started reading the top selling real estate books on Amazon. These books were written by top real estate professionals. Being a new agent, he was extremely excited to learn! Aman tried to soak up any information he could. But something seemed wrong.
All the advice being offered felt old and outdated. These books offered advice on open houses, post cards and handwritten letters. But nothing on the internet, social media and technology.
Aman thought, “If I were to purchase a brand new TV, what would I do? I would do my research online. I would look at the different specs, pros/cons, reviews etc. So why wouldn’t I use the same approach when buying a home?”
That’s when it clicked. Aman knew he needed to do something drastically different to stand out from all the other real estate agents in the area. He started to vigorously search online to see what other top real estate agents were doing to stand out. He came across a video interview with Ryan Fitzgerald, a real estate agent and blogger from Raleigh, North Carolina. Aman saw someone similar to himself. An agent who was young, just starting out in real estate and didn’t like the “old fashioned” way of doing business. You know, the old tried and true methods of colding calling and hosting open houses.
While those methods may work for some real estate agents, they were not for him. In his interview, Ryan spoke passionately about his website and how he was creating content to stand out. He wasn’t planning on blindly asking people for business. But instead, by providing valuable information that buyers and sellers could use. So that’s what Aman decided he was going to do. Chris and Karen Highland are a husband and wife real estate team in Central Maryland. Chris has been selling real estate for almost 25 years, while Karen joined him in the business 9 years ago.
